About article:
During this period when geopolitical concerns lead to increased interest in Arabic studies, we are
obliged not only to describe, analyse, and comment on the unknown or the new phenomena that
originated in the Arab world, but it is also our duty to look back at the most important figures who
shaped Oriental studies in the past. One of the leading experts in this particular field in Slovakia
was undoubtedly Professor PhDr. Ladislav Drozdík, CSc. – a prominent linguist, teacher and
translator. This year he would have celebrated his 90th birthday if he had not passed away on the
4th of March 2017. Unfortunately, despite playing a decisive role in the development of Arabic
studies, his professional life and works are, perhaps unjustly, relatively little known. Therefore, in
our article we wish to focus on Drozdík’s remarkable academic career and his achievements in
order to describe the circumstances that shaped this exceptional individual as well as the sometimes
unfavourable conditions under which he created the majority of his enduring contributions to the
field. It is, however, rather unfortunate that due to his death some questions concerning his personal
decisions must remain unanswered
