If a map is viewed as a manner of presentation through the map language, then that language may be viewed as a system of structural levels consisting of signics (a stock of signs), morphography, syntax and map stylistics, too. Map stylistics deals with map style (the style of maps), which can be defined as a set of characteristic features of the map, based on a purposeful selection of expressional means (map stylemes), by means of which some map functions are supported. Both the functions and the style-forming factors (subjective and objective) of map are classified. Three groups of map styles are delimitated and classified: historical, contemporaneous and individual up to regional where the delimitation of them is concretized to individual styles, in the framework of which style variants and subvariants are distinguished.
