Close relatives? Slovakia and Czechia in the context of international comparative research 100 years since the Czechoslovak republic
Blízki príbuzní? Slovensko a Česko v kontexte medzinárodných komparatívnych výskumov 100 rokov od ČSR
Program: SRDA
Project leader: Mgr. Ing. Bahna Miloslav PhD.
Annotation:The project aims to provide answers to the question if comparative analysis can identify enduring similarities between the societies of the former Czechoslovakia a hundred years after its establishment. The means to this end is to continue the participation of Slovakia in the international comparative research programs International Social Survey Programme (ISSP) and Comparative Study of Electoral Systems (CSES). Stability and change will be analyzed within three contemporary grand narratives of social change as well as within theories identifying changes in the respective areas of society. Participation of Slovakia in the ISSP already since 1995 (since 1992 as a part of the ČSFR) offers the opportunity to analyze the period of the last thirty years. Within the project itself ISSP surveys on social inequality, environment, health and family will be fielded as well as electoral behavior will be analyzed as part of the CSES survey. Further analyses will be carried out on data which became available before or during the course of the project. These will include comparative analysis of ISSP modules on national identity, citizenship, work orientations, role of government, social networks and religion. Surveys carried out within the project will include a series of methodological experiments aimed at evaluating the reliability of measurement and at improving the level of standardization within comparative research. The planned tests under the circumstance of the extraordinary language and cultural closeness of the two ex-Czechoslovak countries offer an interesting laboratory for measurement invariance testing. Research carried out within the project will also enable the inclusion of Slovakia into contemporary comparative analyses. The successful fielding of the surveys is also a precondition for further participation of the project team in the scientific and thematic heading of the ISSP where they serve as one of the five members of the steering committee.

Literary/artistic artefact and its contexts (Comparative literature and social sciences)
Literárny/umelecký artefakt a jeho kontexty (Komparatistika a sociálne vedy)
Program: VEGA
Project leader: prof. PhDr. Miháliková Silvia PhD.
Annotation:The project deals with the conceptualization of new approaches to analyses of literary work and its contextes and subsequently processes, where it plays the main part. Their identifrication is complicated in theory, consisting of multiple approaches of various disciplines, in this case chiefly the sociology. The well established paradigm of creative-artistic process: author, text, reader – is completed by context survey of each of mentioned components. The project aims to build a new methodology and theory of contextes, as well as the incorporation of the concept of the author as a main part of the complex approach to literary work, where each aspect has its fundamental role.

International student mobility, cultural capital and inter-generational social mobility: Strategies and unintended consequences
Medzinárodná mobilita študentov, kultúrny kapitál a medzigeneračná sociálna mobilita: Vedomé stratégie a nezamýšľané dôsledky
Program: VEGA
Project leader: Mgr. Ing. Bahna Miloslav PhD.
Annotation:Research identifies international student mobility as a strategy to retain privileged position of children from (upper) middle class families in the context of massification of tertiary education. Positive selectivity of mobile students from Slovakia with regard to cultural capital of their parents indicates that this view has its relevance also in the Slovak case. The project aims to widen our knowledge on international student mobility and the cultural and economic capital of their families by the study of inter-generational transfer of social status. Are there differences in inter-generational transfer of social status based on the location of post graduation employment (at home / abroad)? Research in Germany identified the advantage a degree from a university abroad provides on the domestic labor market. Can a similar premium be identified at the Slovak labor market and how does it change with time? What role do formal and informal intermediaries and social networks play in the studied case?

Changing Representations of a Decent Life in the Life History Narratives and in the Public Discourse
Meniace sa predstavy o slušnom živote v životopisných rozprávaniach a spoločenskom diskurze
Program: VEGA
Project leader: PhDr. Kusá Zuzana CSc.
Annotation:The project goal is to illuminate continuing decline of social solidarity - understood here as the warranty of decent life for all - by examining relations among changing normative ideas of decent life in the political discourse and the ideas people formulate during narration about their life at particular time and space. At the same time, the project intends to prove the usefulness of the secondary analysis of qualitative data and thus legitimate the intent to design and construct the multilevel and open archive of life history narratives and other qualitative data collected by Zuzana Kusá during her research projects since 1990. The aim is to secure that preparation of the metadata and the material anonymization would bear the toughest ethical criteria and meet conditions for secondary utilisation of qualitative data not only in descriptive research but in the theoretical research too.

The Image of the "Other" in post-1989 Slovak politics
Obraz „Iného“ v slovenskej politike po roku 1989
Program: VEGA
Project leader: Mgr. Tížik Miroslav PhD.
Annotation:The aim of the project is to analyse political discourse in Slovakia using the theory of symbolic power (P. Bourdieu) and the theory of social dominance (Sidanius - Pratto). The process of "othering" by means of external construction of the identity of individual actors, i.e., by categorization, is considered one of the key aspects of the formation and reproduction of the hierarchical relations in the domestic and foreign policy of Slovakia. Our aim is to identify the role of the "othering" in the political interaction. Project is focused on the formation of the relations of symbolic power and on the tools applied in its framework. We will analyze the influence of categorization of particular groups on their role in the public life. Research team will be focused on the question, to what extent is the creation of "Other" relevant in political interactions and to what extent does it affect the relations of symbolic power? Our research will be conducted on the levels of domestic and foreign policy of Slovakia.

Work then and now: Institutional, organizational and interactional conditions of occupational accomplishment
Práca kedysi a v súčasnosti: inštitucionálne, organizačné a interakčné podmienky uskutočňovania povolania
Program: VEGA
Project leader: Mgr. Lindbloom Jana PhD.
Annotation:The project addresses the concept and phenomenon of paid work. Via multiple case studies, it examines the transformation of work as an occupation, position, and employment. It draws on approaches which connect the practical accomplishment of work with the processes of organization, institutional contexts and socio-material relations. Work is conceived as an area and process of ongoing decision-making, action, reaction, accommodation, or negotiation. It is precisely this interpretative, interactive and relational nature of work which will be juxtaposed with perhaps more abstracted concepts of other relevant theories and research in order to provide fuller and denser clarification. The aim of the project is to compare selected cases with one another and with other texts or findings. At the same time, it also aspires to point out other connections, maybe less noticed, which nevertheless impact work descriptions, performance and identification, as well as coping strategies.

Social trust in Slovakia
Spoločenská dôvera na Slovensku
Program: VEGA
Project leader: Mgr. Klobucký Robert PhD.
Annotation:Social trust is considered to be a basic condition and the foundation of social life, which enables the functioning of human relationships and democratic institutions. Slovakia, along with many other post-communist countries, belongs among countries with low social and institutional trust, but this topic has not been analysed in its complexity yet. One of the main objectives of the project is to provide an answer to the question of what is the state of social trust in Slovakia, what changes has it gone through since 1990 and how does it relate to democracy. In this context, we will be also interested in the relationship of conspiracy thinking and trust. As part of the research of political trust, we will also focus on the forms of its visual communication.

Subjective Perception of the Environmental Values in Slovakia
Subjektívne vnímanie hodnoty životného prostredia na Slovensku
Program: VEGA
Project leader: Mgr. Strapcová Katarína PhD.
Annotation:Along with the scientific and technological development of modern societies, concerns about the state of the environment and its negative impact on human health are becoming increasingly urgent. Sociologists are increasingly considering the impact of ecological risks on social life, describing in detail the new conditions of human existence in the era of so-called global civilization risks, which in the process of modernization produce new conflicts and types of inequalities. At the same time, theoretic concepts related to universal threats to ecological risks necessitate exploring how the environmental problems resonate in public opinion. In Slovakia, we have a relatively large amount of data related to the environment, especially from international research (ISSP, EVS, Eurobarometer). One of the main objectives of the project is a complex comparative analysis of the key environmental values and attitudes, as well as the development after 1989.
