From original documents and royal decrees we learn that a belt of uncultivated territory, the so-called confine, existed in the 11th up to the 13th centuries also between the Czech and Hungarian Empires. The author of the study deals with one section of this Czech-Hungarian confine, on the line between the present-day small towns of Holíč – Skalica – Strážnica – Uhorské Hradiště. His paper is based upon the delimitation of the Skalica Dominion of two feudal lords which took place in the years 1217 and 1256. The donation documents of these years contain very valuable data concerning the hydrology of the district, as well as about the geo- graphical relief and vegetation and the state of Communications. Among the roads there is mentioned also in the documents chiefly the so-called road of Czech frontier guards, Via Exploratorum de Boemia, used by them for the protection of the frontiers.
