The local centres have been established as the basic degree in the central places hierarchy by a decree of the government of the ČSSR. They have to ensure conditions for the population of the whole tributary area to be supplied, to use services and they have to grow into the cores of concentration of population growths. Their central functions are fulfilled mainly in rural areas, but besides villages also small towns belong to them. In the article, the development of the system of local centres is outlined, their functions (residential, service one) and relations to both administrative and territorial division are analysed as well as the trend of growth is explained (changes in population number within the period from 1960 to 1980). When the ascertained development trends confronted with the real development, topical tasks of the research of local centres from the geographical viewpoint are laid out.
