The Slovak Academy of Sciences (SAS) awarded the most important, successful and internationally recognized Slovak vine breeder Dorota Pospíšilová. Today, the author of more than twenty new varieties, as well as professional and scientific literature, received the SAS commemorative medal created on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the founding of the Academy from the hands of the President of the SAS, Pavol Šajgalík.

"Dorota Pospíšilová surpassed her companions with her commitment, intellect and immense tenacity and contributed to the fact that today 'new' Slovak wines are talked about - and appreciated - even in the traditional European wine community," said Prof. Pavol Šajgalik.

Dorota Pospíšilová's most famous wines include Devín, Dunaj, Hron, Rudava and Váh. "With the instinct of a great researcher, she searched for the carriers of the rarest taste and aromatic properties in the genetic equipment of the grapevine and created varieties providing an unrepeatable spectrum of new flavours," highlighted the President of the Academy in his speech, emphasizing that thanks to her, Slovakia achieved significant progress in viticulture and winemaking.

As Pavol Šajgalík further mentioned, Dorota Pospíšilová is not only a top scientist but also a prolific author. Her last publication, Lesný vinič, published by SAS Veda Publishing House, is the result of a European project, within the framework of which she searched for and discovered valuable sites of forest vine listed in the Red Book of endangered plant species.

Dorota Pospíšilová was very moved by receiving the SAS commemorative medal and by the recognition of the scientific community. "I am very grateful to the Academy that its scientists have noticed my work, to which I have devoted my whole life, so that it had meaning. Apparently, I succeeded. I feel gratitude deep in my heart. I never worked in the Academy, yet scientists noticed me and invited me among them," said the renowned expert in her acceptance speech.

Dorota Pospíšilová is the recipient of many important state honours and awards from the wine community. She is also the expert guarantor of the Víno SAV event, a competition that regularly brings together scientists and enologists with the aim of selecting the best Slovak wines made from Slovak grapes.

This event also awards the SAS Award for innovativeness. This year, it was won by the Devín 2018 wine from the Karpatská perla winery from Šenkvíce. The champion of white wines was Tramín rosé 2022 from Navara Vinárstvo, s. r. o., Veľký Biel.  The overall champion of the competition was Neronet 2018 wine from Michal Sadloň – winery, Limbach.
