Astronomical Institute SAS in Tatranská Lomnica (AI SAS) is celebrating the 80th anniversary of its foundation. On this occasion, and on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, it opens its high-altitude observatories to the general public. The unique opportunity to visit these research workplaces will take place on July 15 and August 19, 2023.

AI SAS  invites fans of astronomy to the open days it organizes during the holidays at the observatories on Skalnaté Pleso and Lomnický štít. During two summer Saturdays, space enthusiasts will have the opportunity to get to know the work of astronomers, look into the spaces where they carry out their measurements and observations, and see the telescopes and instrumentation of the observatories.

"At Skalnaté Pleso, we will show visitors a 1.3-meter mirror telescope, the largest in Slovakia. On Lomnický štít, they will get to know the world-class equipment designed for observing the solar corona," explains Ján Svoreň from AI SAS.

There will be entrances to the observatory at Skalnaté Pleso every hour and every half hour from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. On Lomnicky štít, the employees of AI SAS will carry out guided tours continuously during the period of operation of the cable car. Entrance to the observatories is free.
