The first Slovak supercomputer, Aurel, is helping to fight a worldwide pandemic caused by the new coronavirus. The Centre of Operations SAS – Computing Centre provides Aurel to help with the realisation of the project A-SPIKE, which is implemented by the Centre of Experimental Medicine of the Slovak Academy of Sciences.

“The pandemic spread of the disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus has created challenges for scientific researchers of different scientific fields, and a structure of glycoprotein is one of them. This protein provides the penetration of the virus into the cells of a potential host,” says the leader of the project RNDr. Magdaléna Májeková, PhD. from the Institute of Experimental Pharmacology & Toxicology of the Centre of Experimental Medicine SAS.

According to the scientist, the complex knowledge about the structure of this glycoprotein is crucial for the development of various methods.

“The so-far available experimental data do not contain the part on the glycoprotein. The aim of the A-SPIKE project is to obtain the structural data on the glycoprotein which can help in the development of the new methods in the fight against the SARS-CoV-2,” adds Magdaléna Májeková.
