Evaluation seminar in the Third Department with open discussion format

An evaluation seminar and meeting of presidents and chairpersons of scientific committees of organisations in the Third Scientific Department of the Slovak Academy of Sciences (SAS) was held at the VEDA Small Congress Centre in Bratislava on 15 March 2016.
The Presidium of the SAS was represented by the SAS Vice-Chairperson for Research, Dr Eva Majkov£; the SAS Vice-Chairperson of the Third Scientific Department, Prof. Emil Viレnovsk�; the Scientific Secretary of the SAS, Dr Duレan G£lik; and the other members of the SAS?s Presidium for the Third Scientific Department, as well as the Chairperson of the Third Chamber of the SAS Assembly, Dr Zuzana Kus£.
In the first part of the seminar, Dr Majkov£ presented an update regarding the long-term development programme of the SAS - SAS 2020. She also informed the participants of the intentions of the amendment to the Law on the SAS and the motivations for evaluation of SAS research institutes by the panel of foreign experts. She also challenged workplaces in the Third Scientific Department to apply, via projects, for grants from the European Research Council (ERC). She likewise pointed out the opportunity to apply for support in the form of internship programmes for collectives working on ERC projects.
Prof. Viレ￲ovsk� gave a presentation on topics for SAS research programmes, the so-called Open Academy, formulated as socially up-to-date interdisciplinary and integrative topics.
In the next part of the meeting of SAS presidents, issues regarding running costs, as well as a vision of a polyfunctional social sciences building in the Patr￳nka premises of the SAS, were dealt with.
In the second part of the seminar, Prof. Viレ￲ovsk� summarized the yearly evaluation of research results from eighteen institutes in the Third Department for the last year. In an open discussion, the presidents and chairpersons contributed with their opinions and questions.
