About article:
The article informs about some aspects of applying geographical methods of town study in the planning practice. The author outlines a survey of procedures commonly used for town function analyses and emphasizes the differences in the analyses delph, depending upon the size of territory examined. He distinguishes macro-, meso- and microreseraches of functions, so fas as a network of towns on large territory, small territory or a single town are studied. He divides the research methods in indirect ones, which utilize the existing bases and statistical da a, and direct methods supported by terrain exploration. Based on his own ascertainments and examples from the Polish and foreign literature, the author States that the demographic data traditionally used do not fully suffice for the functional classification, especially as far as small towns are concerned. He gives several possibilities for widening the classification criteria, by which the functions could be determined more precisely and results suitable for town planning could be obtained. The article is particularly important, because it discusses the question of practical application of the geographical research of towns.
