On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Great October Socialist Revolution the author analyses the existing development of the Soviet geography and on the basis of generalization he distinguishes up-to-date main directions of its development: investigation of natural conditions, ascertaining of natural resources to utilize them effectively for national economy and devising the scientific bases of the delimitation of social production, of the lay-out of population and devising the development of productive forces of economic areas of the country. On the basis of the conclusions of the XXVth Congress of the CPSU the author formulates the future directions of research in Soviet geography: Maximum utilization of the attainments of present scientific-technological revolution for the future development of productive forces (utilization of integrational potential of geography], assistance of geography in effective improvement of state planning, protection and improvement of human environment as a part of a wider interdisciplinary problem of the acting of society and nature.
