About article:
On the occasion of the 190th anniversary of the decease of the significant Bratislava geographer Karol Gottlieb Windisch (1725 – 1793) the author evaluates his significance for the development of geography in Slovakia in the latter half of the 18th century. He deals with his organizing and publishing activities.
In 1780 Windisich’s textbook Geographie und Geschichte des Kőnigreichs Ungarn fűr Kinder was published in Bratislava. The texbook achieved four editions and was used at Slovak schools.
Windisch’s greatest scientific success was the geographical manual Geographie des Kőnigreichs Ungarn, Pressburg 1780, 2nd vol. In face of the times it contained a comprehensive synthesis of the geography of the Old Hungary. Juraj Palkovič himself, being professor at the Evangelia Gymnasium in Bratislava, draw material from it when writing the textbook of geography for Slovak schools Známost Vlasti (Recognition of the Mother-country), the manual serving him as a mehodic model.
As an organizer and editor of both the Jonrnals Ungrisches Magazin and Neues Ungrisches Magazin gave first an impulse to the research of the landscape and people in Slovakia just through the studies from the teritory of Slovakia.
