The author submits an outlined contribution to the development of geographical recognition of the territory of Slovakia since the daybreak of its history. As works, which were shifting this recognition gradually for- wards, are considered literary and map works and as to the most ancient times also mentions of some localities on its territory. The first part deals with the principles of selection and of the evaluation of works, while the second part gives a survey of geographically valuable production according to chronological succession. In the third part, instead of a conclusion, an attempt at a periodization is, submitted, with evaluation of the individual periods crudely until 1945.
