The 300th anniversary of birth of the prominent sub-Tatran natural scientist Johann Georg Buchholtz (1688 – 1737) falls on this year. Buchholtz was a distinguished associate of the Slovak polyhistor Matej Bel. He explored the nature of the Liptov, Orava and Spiš lands, but above all the Tatra Mountains. He was the first scientific speleologist in Slovakia. As the first he also made attempts with measuring the altitudes. The international organization UNESCO has included this Buchholtz’s anniversary into the worlďs anniversaries for 1988.
