In the central part of the Záhorská Nížina Lowland (western Slovakia), there is an area of sand dunes, at present grown over with pine monocultures. Plenty of fen peat bogs of a young-Holocene age are found in the inter-dune depressions. As an example, in the contribution there is a description of its rise, evolution, vegetation cover composition in the past and at present together with pointing out the economic importance.
