About article:
The paper deals with three types of environmental problems: 1. with environmental problems of autochthonous origin, 2. with environmental problems having longe-range effects, and 3. with environmental problems of predominantly allochthonous origin. For each of these types selected case studies are presented. Among the first category the negative impacts of the Upper Rhine regulations as well as the development of the hydroelectrical resources and the navigation route are described. A second case study is dedicated to the air quality trends with an emphasis on photochemical oxidants. The second category of environmental problems originates in the Upper-Rhine-Region but is of critical concern also for other areas as, for instance, the Netherlands with regard to the salt pollution of the Rhine river, caused by the Alsatian potassium industry. Ecological impacts, extending down to the Middle Rhine section, have also been observed as a result of the Sandoz accident in November 1986. The most serious environmental problem in the FRG is the forest decline, attributed to atmospheric pollution. It includes the Upper Rhine Region and especially the Black Forest, which is one of the most heavily affected areas with 75 % of damaged trees according to the last inventory of 1987. The causal interpretation is very complex, but obviously long-range transports of air pollutants essentially contribute.
