About article:
The paper is dedicated to the ideas of Pavol Dobšinský presented in his book "Reflections of the Slovak legends" that has been virtually ignored by the Slovak scholars since the end of the 1950s. Dobšinský´s interpretation of folklore material was close to the conceptions of earlier mythological school based on the ideas of Romantism, in particular to the ideas of Russian scholar Alexander Afanasjev. While in other Slavic countries and in Europe in general earlier mythological school developed into various scientific trends, in Slovakia Dobšinský´s attempts to reconstruct Slavic mythology were not maintained and were perceived by the Slovak scholars as rather naive. To explain the reasons of this, the authors analyze Dobšinský´s ideas: (1) from the perspective of contemporary Slovak folkloristics; (2) in the broader context of development of the ideas of mythological school in the West and in the East.
