The study contains the basic data concerning the development of the Institute of Geography of the Slovak Academy of Sciences founded by the Act of the Slovak National Board on June, 18, 1953. On that day the SAS takes over the former Geographical Institute of the Slovak Academy of Sciences and Arts. The Geographical Institute of the SAS becomes the predecessor of the contemporary centre. In new organizational classification it finds good conditions for its development. In 1963 the Geographical Institute of the SAS gains the contemporary name of the Institute of Geography of the SAS. Its organizational structure in the years 1964, 1978, 1989 is defined by number of researchers and its position at the preparation, coordination and solutions of the task of the state plan of the basic research in the field of geographical disciplines is set. Physical geography, human geography and in the last years also geo-information have been cultivated at the Institute. It consists of cartography, remote sensing and geographical information systems. In the course of the 50 years’ history the Institute acquired a privileged position among other geographical centres in former Czecho-Slovakia. It is well known also abroad. Today it disposes of the best preconditions for the solution of demanding problems of the geographical disciplines and practice.
