The environmental conditions experienced during development profoundly affect health and physiology in adult life. Studies in Drosophila have shown that early developmental factors (e.g. developmental temperature, dietary composition) have significant long-term consequences for adult physiology and various fitness-related traits such as lifespan, reproduction or stress tolerance. The underlying mechanism of these effects, however, are not fully understood.
