Annotation
The traditional approach to the study of welfare has focused primarily on the prevention of suffering, fear and pain. As a result, the science of animal welfare is heavily 'biased' towards the study of negative experiences. However, advances in science are leading us to consider positive animal experiences, also referred to as positive welfare. It is currently unclear what techniques, tests and procedures are appropriate for assessing positive experiences of farm animals, including poultry. The aim of this thesis will be to identify existing procedures for assessing positive welfare in poultry, to propose and test appropriate methods for assessing positive welfar in poultry, or to test ways to induce positive affective states.
