Annotation
Squalene, a natural intermediate in sterol biosynthetic pathway, is widely used in several areas of human health, such as medicine, food, pharmacy and cosmetics. The aim of this work is to identify suitable species of non-conventional yeasts that would be able to accumulate squalene using traditional as well as modern genetic methods. The acquired knowledge can contribute to the biotechnological production of squalene by microorganisms and to the elucidation of the bioactive effects of squalene on human health.
