Annotation
In addition to their storage function, lipid droplets have the potential to protect the cell from toxic sterols that may be taken up from the environment or accumulate in cells in the event of impaired sterol biosynthesis. Using the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, we are looking for a mechanism(s) by which cells monitor structural differences in sterol molecules and transport harmfull sterols from membranes to lipid droplets.
