Annotation
Transferrin family of proteins have important role in iron homeostasis, but also in the innate immune response. Lactoferrin is transferrin principally found in milk, but also in other body fluids and in the sites of inflammation. Lactoferrin efficiently combats viral and bacterial infections and participates in the regulation of plasminogen activation. Activation or suppression of plasmin influences the fibrinolysis with the consequences for pathogen invasion or tumour infiltration. Structural bases of lactoferrin-plasminogen interaction will be studied by methods of structural biology and biophysics, in collaboration with Slovak and foreign research teams.
