Annotation
The need to protect the ingroup and be wary about the members of the perceived outgroup is deeply rooted in our psychology and perceived threat from others may be realistic or symbolic (Stephan et al., 2008). However, this ingrained suspiciousness toward others is often exploited by conspiracy theories that serve to provide people with an antagonistic outgroup that can be blamed for the problems of the ingroup. Belief in conspiracy theories is often linked with prejudices against the targeted groups. Most of the research in this area was cross-sectional, the dissertation thesis will examine the possible inter-personal effects of conspiracy beliefs experimentally.
