This project deals with the synthesis and characterization of new types of polymer composites based on water soluble or waterborne polymers and 2D (MXenes) and 1D (carbon nanotubes, CNT) nanofillers. MXenes are new class of inorganic 2D materials, which structure can vary. MXenes are prepared by etching one of the components in original MAX phase. Different MAX phases are prepared usually by mechano-chemical processes. Using broad spectrum of inorganic substances is possible to prepare various types of MAX phases and consequently MXenes.
The aim of the project is development of methods for the formation of two-dimensional titanium carbides (MXene-Ti3C2) and study of their structural features. The study of using the synthesized materials MXene and other carbon based nanofillers for the preparation of polymer composites with high efficiency of absorption of electromagnetic radiation in the microwave frequency range is next aim. The goal is the production of stable water colloids of MXenes, which could be then directly mixed with waterborne polymers. Using this approach homogeneous polymer composites will be prepared. The main challenge in the research of MXene is their massive production and stability.
The combination of 2D nanomaterials as MXene and 1D filler as CNT and their incorporation into polymer matrix will lead to the composite with very low percolation threshold (low filler loading) with high electric conductivity and superior EMI shielding capabilities.Main physico-chemical methods for characterization wil be X-ray photoelectrone spectroscopy (XPS) to study the surfaces and interfaces.
The prepared polymer composites and hybrid structures will be tested in applications such as gas sensors, materials suitable for electromagnetic shielding and in batteries. We have these applications covered from running projects with experienced foreign research institutes.
