Europe Through Textiles: European Network for an integrated and interdisciplinary field in the Humanities
Europe Through Textiles: European Network for an integrated and interdisciplinary field in the Humanities
Program: COST
Project leader: Mgr. Štolcová Tereza PhD.
Annotation:The scholarly vision is to re-write European history based on its massive production, trade, consumption and reuse of textiles and dress. The goal is to identify expertise across time in sustainable textile practices. For this purpose, ITCs are crucial for their experience in ancient techniques and cultural heritage in textile craft. EuroWeb offers multiple theoretical and practical training schools, mentors, targeted career development masterclasses for the ECIs, with the aim to increase EU funding for ITC scholars and ECIs. Each year, EuroWeb aims to host large international textile and dress conferences in the ITCs, to highlight their collections, capacities and scholarship. EuroWeb enables collaborations between researchers, engineers, scholars and other stakeholders and business by providing a platform for them to collaborate, co-create projects and training schools, and foster trust and shared ideas. Deliverables include collaborative publications, research workshops, theoretical reflection and advancement, digital infrastructure, EuroWeb digital Atlas, films and podcasts, and intense mentoring, training and career development for ECIs.

Integrating Neandertal Legacy: From Past to Present
Integrácia neandertálskeho dedičstva: Od minulosti po súčasnosť
Program: COST
Project leader: Mgr. Nemergut Adrián PhD.
Annotation:The main aim and objective of the Action is to build a long term, interdisciplinary network of scientists from various European countries with mutual goals: re-evaluating Neandertal heritage (biological and cultural), assessing the „missing“ data, pinpointing relevant questions in the light of new developments (e.g. technical advances) and creating data sharing platform. This will be achieved through the specific objectives detailed in the Technical Annex. The aim will be solve in four working groups (WG 1: The fossil data, WG 2: Cultural data, WG 3: Molecular data, WG 4: From past to present). Institute of Archaeology belongs to WG 2.

Program: Horizon 2020
Project leader: doc. PhDr. Ruttkay Matej CSc.
Annotation:The core objectives of the project are to explore the impact of mobility on early medieval populations, refine the methods of archaeogenetic research, and establish a multidisciplinary model for future research. Institute of Archaeology SAS is an associated partner of ELTE, with whom the bilaterla agreement was signed on the cooperation on given project. IA SAS will provide selection and will submit the samples of human bone material from selected archaeological sites in Slovakia.

From the Late Roman Border to the Barbarian Hinterland: A Study of Leather and Textile Objects Found in Germanic Elite Graves of the 4th and 5th Centuries AD, with a Focus on the Territory of Slovakia
Od neskororímskej hranice po barbarské vnútrozemie: štúdium kožených a textilných predmetov nájdených v germánskych elitných hroboch zo 4. a 5. storočia nášho letopočtu, so zameraním na územie Slovenska.
Program: Other
Project leader: Mgr. Štolcová Tereza PhD.
Annotation:The BELT project (Barbarian Elite Leather Textiles) proposes an innovative and comprehensive scientific approach to an analysis and reassessment of leather and textile finds from Germanic elite graves in Slovakia dated to the Late Roman and Early Migration Periods (4th and 5th centuries AD). The core of the project is the unique double-chambered wooden grave from Poprad-Matejovce, where a blend of Barbaric and Roman elements is evident, also in the leather and textile finds. The main objectives are to provide new insights into the manufacturing technology of these objects in relation to other contemporary elite graves, to identify their function, and to develop a method of recognising and differentiating the expression of the status via leather and textile goods. Leather is an understudied material in the archaeological sources in Slovakia and thus the project is crucial for Slovak archaeology. Since there are no experts in the analysis of archaeological leather or textiles in Slovakia, during the planned scholarship at the Centre for Textile Research (CTR) at the University of Copenhagen and at the Danish National Museum, I wanted to gain practical experience and technical training. I would therefore like to broaden my knowledge of textile fibre analysis within the Slovak Academy of Sciences - Seal of Excellence project by identifying skin types and to learn about modern analysis techniques such as proteomics or genomics. The BELT project will thus build up a solid basis for the methods of systematic research on leather and textiles in Slovakia and beyond. Given the focus on archaeological leather, the project will constitute a new research domain, that is highly relevant also in a wider European context. Within the project, I will strengthen interdisciplinary collaboration not only between the researchers in Slovakia, but also with specialised institutions in Europe. Given that the project is not feasible in its entirety, as originally submitted in the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions: Individual Fellowships program, I reduced the project objectives to those that are feasible from Slovakia and during short-term foreign business trips.

The Dynamics of Settlement Concentration Processes and Land-use in Early Farming Communities in the North-western Carpathian Basin
The Dynamics of Settlement Concentration Processes and Land-use in Early Farming Communities in the North-western Carpathian Basin
Program: Bilateral - other
Project leader: PhDr. Cheben Ivan CSc.
Annotation:Exploring processes of agglomeration and dispersion in this way involves attention drawn to socio-environmental processes of great complexity and variability in detail. Currently, our knowledge about such processes in the Neolithic and Bronze Age is still very insufficient. Even for a purely descriptive account of settlement patterns in a diachronic perspective, intensive fieldwork and data analysis within a multi-disciplinary and multi-scalar approach is necessary. It can however, be managed by a directed, intensive, and long-term effort such as that provided by a CRC. For a case study, the excellent preservation conditions in the Žitava Valley area enable us to study socio-economic and environmental processes leading to and away from social agglomerations, and social complexity among early horticulturalists and early metallurgists.
