Abstract
Valentine’s Day in Slovakia
The monograph is the first historical-ethnological probe into the history of the Valentine's Day in Slovakia. It brings knowledge about the entry, spread, domestication of the holiday, its significance and functions for the inhabitants of Slovakia in the 21st century, both for individuals and for members of various social groups. From an ethnological perspective, it traces the holiday practice, i.e. the ways of experiencing and celebrating Valentine's Day, which provides a framework for examining the processes of transformation of holiday culture in Slovakia after 1990 in the conditions of late modernity. The published findings are based on the study of a wide range of diverse sources: from art-historical monuments, museum objects and archival documents, through questionnaire surveys and research interviews, to Internet sources. The development and contemporary forms of Valentine's Day in Slovakia – still referred to as a new holiday, but already domesticated here – are also presented in the original pictorial material included in the monograph.
