Annotation
The figure of director, actor, and educator Ján Jamnický ranks among the most prominent figures in 20th-century Slovak professional theater. Several popular and scholarly articles, partial studies, and anthologies compiling surviving archival materials have been published on his work and personality. To this day, however, Slovak theater studies lack a more comprehensive work that would highlight, in particular, the influences of the European avant-garde (especially from Germany, Russia, and the Czech lands) on Jamnický’s directorial poetics. The aim of this dissertation is precisely to map the intersections of Jamnický’s work within the context of the avant-garde trends of his time.
