High-quality, reliable and accurate information on the taxonomy, systematics and phylogeny of organisms is a prerequisite for their effective conservation. Biodiversity is under severe anthropogenic pressure and we are currently experiencing a significant decline in species, which is logically most pronounced in tropical areas, considered as biodiversity hotspots. The negative changes are most pronounced in freshwater ecosystems, which are also home to 24 Elmidae riffle beetles. The processing and analysis of the rich material from several regions of South America, using modern molecular approaches, will yield many important results (e.g. description of new species, clarification of phylogenetic relationships) and thus contribute to the conservation of the world's biodiversity.
