| Annotation: | Insects are a dominant component of terrestrial biodiversity, and their evolutionary history is crucial for understanding past and present ecosystems. Cockroaches are among the oldest groups of insects and have played a significant role in terrestrial ecosystems as decomposers for hundreds of millions of years, supporting nutrient cycling in the environment. However, their full ecological and evolutionary history remains unclear. This project investigates fossil cockroaches through: 1) systematics, 2) taxonomy, 3) taphonomy, 4) paleoecology, and 5) paleogeography—focusing on diversification, extinction, biotic interactions, and morphological variability. The material studied will come from Paleozoic sediments (~323–298 Ma), Mesozoic amber and sediments (~251–66 Ma), and modern rainforests. Advanced methods, such as synchrotron tomography, SEM, IR spectroscopy and microscopy, are expected to yield new insights into the macroevolution and paleoecology of this resilient group of insects. |

| Annotation: | Subcortical and wood-boring insects are common phoretic hosts for a wide range of mites from the family Digamasellidae, which inhabit identical substrates. As a result of adaptive mechanisms, these mites have developed complex life strategies (including phoresy) that allow them to successfully colonize various microhabitats in dying or dead trees, e.g. galleries of xylophagous insects, bark debris, decomposing wood and fruiting bodies of wood-decaying fungi. The analysis of adaptations to abiotic factors of the external environment, especially climatogenic and substratogenic factors, will allow to characterize these mites with respect to their specific ecological requirements. The project will provide new insights into the species diversity, host preference, ecology and distribution of these mites in Slovakia. The results will include new identification keys with original illustrations and photographs, taxonomic revisions and morphological diagnoses of the studied taxa. |

| Annotation: | In this project, we will focus on groups of butterflies and sawflies that contain as yet unrecognised species and taxa with unclear systematics and bionomy. These are selected representatives of butterflies from the genera Pieris, Apatura and Melitaea and sawflies from the genera Pamphilius, Hinatara and Mesoneura.
We will focus on:
1. clarifying the systematic position of some taxa.
2. distinguishing species within the genera studied on the basis of morphometric and molecular analyses.
3. description of the ecological requirements and bionomy of each species.

| Annotation: | Rapid changes in landscape and climate during the last centuries have been largely responsible for the decline in
insectivorous birds. These changes caused also decline in food and habitat diversity as well as negative range
trends in several species. The food and habitat are crucial for the survival of a population, especially in
specialists. The project will evaluate food parameters in relation to environmental conditions in time series in
some species of insectivorous birds (genera Merops, Lanius, Galerida) and, using acoustic playback
experiments, also intraspecific interactions of some species (Acrocephalus). Assessment of foraging behavior
and vocalizations in specific habitats of these species will bring new, more complex scientific knowledge, help
explain population and range trends and use them as indicators of landscape changes. Understanding the
functional relationships of model endangered species could also improve a different approach in conservation
management compared to common species. |
