| Annotation: | The Israeli-Palestinian conflict remains as one of the world's most enduring confrontations, with roots that extend back over a century. At the close of the Ottoman era, the three Palestinian sanjaqs were home to multiple ethnic and religious communities. This project aims to shed light on their coexistence during this pivotal moment in the history of this region, which holds significant religious and political importance. Our research heavily relies on contemporary Palestinian newspapers, including publications such as al-Quds, Filastin, al-Karmil, al-Munadi, Herut, and ha-Ahdut. We will complement these sources with relevant articles from Lebanese, Syrian, Egyptian, and Istanbul press, as well as diaries, memoirs, consular reports, and other archival documents. However, the extensive volume of material cannot be efficiently managed through conventional methods, necessitating innovative approaches in the field of digital humanities, including the application of OCR technology for Arabic and Hebrew scripts. Regarding methodology, we will critically assess and analyze newspaper articles and discussions using various methods, primarily discourse analysis and the social identity approach. Additionally, in some instances—particularly when dealing with pivotal texts related to contentious issues—an in-depth analysis will require close reading. We intend to publish the outcomes of our research in academic papers. Potential areas of investigation include an analysis of the conflict within the Patriarchate of Jerusalem, local responses to Zionist settlement, and the allocation of positions within state offices based on ethnic, religious, regional, and familial affiliations. The primary outcome of our project will be a scholarly monograph, written in English and published by an international publishing house. This monograph will provide a comprehensive analysis of ethno-religious coexistence in Palestine during the Second Ottoman Constitutional Period.

The image of Africa in Slovak society and culture in the second half of the 19th century and in the early 20th century

| Annotation: | The aim of this project is to investigate the representation and perception of Africa and Africans in Slovak society
and culture during the latter half of the 19th century and the early 20th century. In recent years, the African
continent has garnered increasing attention in Slovak media, academic discussions, and political debates.
However, these conversations often perpetuate stereotypes and racial prejudices rooted in the era of European
colonial domination. The depiction of Africa as a backward or "dark continent" opposed to Western modernity
became prevalent in Europe from the late 18th to the early 19th century. During the slave trade and European
colonial expansion, Africa was deliberately portrayed as a dark and brutal land, and Africans were described as
primitive and uncivilized to justify colonial conquests. In Slovak social sciences, there has been a lack of
comprehensive studies on how these colonial representations and narratives influenced the Slovak intellectual and
cultural environment of that time. From the point of view of Slovak history, it was an important period when Slovak
intellectual elites fought for the national emancipation of the Slovaks in Hungary and the Habsburg Monarchy. It is
the argument of the project that, on the other hand, they largely reproduced colonial representations of Africa and were able to identify themselves as members of advanced European civilization. This project seeks to examine the
variety of images and themes related to Africa and its inhabitants as portrayed in Slovak press, literature,
education, art, and museum collections during the specified period. By doing so, the project aims to contextualize
modern Slovak history within the framework of post-colonial critique and enhance the understanding of historical
stereotypes and racial prejudices about Africa and Africans in Slovak society. |
