"The international audit has demonstrated that the Slovak Academy of Sciences also has some major players on the European scene in social sciences and humanities" - not just for the SAS Institute of Ethnology - says its director Mgr. Tatiana Podolinská, PhD.

The SAS Institute of Ethnology and Polymer Institute achieved the highest scores in an international audit of scientific institutions in 2016. According to the evaluation panel, their research is among that of international leaders in the European context. This success should see ambition, perseverance, vision and a great amount of humility and resilience being continued based on scientific work in archives, study areas and for field research.

The Institute of Ethnology is among the smaller workplaces at SAS. "We investigate not only heritage that is stored in the archives, but also what is happening today in cultural heritage, how it becomes a product in the commercial market or subject to symbolic capitalization in an environment of political parties at national level or in the practical environment of local urban and general policy. It is not a phenomenon frozen in encyclopaedias and archives, society continues to creatively work with it. For example, its elements appear in modern design, folk songs are motifs of popular songs on the modern music scene. Ethnologists therefore explore the transformation of older and established (creation) new traditions in the lives of today's society, "says the director of the Institute of Ethnology Mgr. Tatiana Podolinská, PhD. "We have produced high-quality results and have reached the highest national level making us a visible and major player in European science."

There is a wide diapason of topics and social phenomena in the current research at the Institute of Ethnology. Basic research is balanced with equal representation of the two main lines that are not strictly separate and often overlap: research traditions and cultural heritage (ethnographic and folklore lines) and human research in contemporary society (socio- and cultural-anthropological lines).
