Climate Change and Forest Mitigation and Adaptation in a Polluted Environment
Klimatická zmena, zmiernenie dopadov na les a jeho adaptácia v znečistenom prostredí
Program: COST
Project leader: Ing. Blaženec Miroslav PhD.
Annotation:The main objective is to increase understanding of state and potential of forest mitigation and adaptation to climate change in a polluted environment, and to reconcile process-oriented research, long-term monitoring and applied modelling at comprehensive forest research sites.Forests are expected to face significant pressures from climate change and air pollution. The COST Strategic Workshop Forest Ecosystems in a Changing Environment: Identifying Future Monitoring and Research Needs, held in Istanbul in 2008, recommended more integration between approaches and themes in order to assess the risks for European forests. This Action creates a platform of experts from different fields, with the following main objectives: 1) to increase understanding of state and potential of forest mitigation and adaptation to climate change in a polluted environment; and 2) to reconcile process-oriented research, long-term monitoring and applied modelling at comprehensive forest research sites (Supersites III). Present forest monitoring in Europe is carried out at Level I and II plots by the ICP Forests programme on behalf of the Convention on Long-range Transboundary Air Pollution. Supersites of Level III were proposed in Istanbul, with the main aim of integrating soil, plant and atmospheric sciences and monitoring, and providing policy-oriented modelling with scientifically sound indicators of pollution and climate-related risks.

FACESMAP - Forest LAnd Ownership Changes in Europe: Significance for Management And Policy
Zmeny vo vlastníctve lesa Európy: Výzva pre manažment a politiky
Program: COST
Project leader: doc., Mgr. Kluvánková-Oravská Tatiana PhD.
Annotation:Forest ownership is changing across Europe. In some areas a growing number of so-called “new” forest owners hold only small parcels, have no agricultural or forestry knowledge and no capacities or interest to manage their forests, while in others new community and private owners are bringing fresh interest and new objectives to woodland management. This diversity and change creates implementation problems for forest-related policies including biodiversity conservation, timber and renewable energy supply, climate change mitigation, or recreation. The objectives of the proposed Action are:
 (1) To analyse attitudes and constraints of different forest owner types in Europe and the ongoing changes (outputs: literature survey, meta-analyses and maps).
 (2) To explore innovative management approaches for new forest owner types (outputs: case studies, critical assessment).
 (3) To study effective policy instruments with a comparative analysis approach (outputs: literature survey, case studies, policy analyses).
 (4) To draw conclusions and recommendations for forest-related policies, forest management practice, further education and future research.
The interdisciplinary work will be done in close cooperation with relevant public and private stakeholders. A COST Action is suited for the strongly needed but still lacking comprehensive European overview and analyses.

Evolúcia znakov - Adaptive and non-adaptive changes of phenotype traits evolving in isolated populations
Adaptívne a neadaptívne zmeny znakov fenotypu, vyvíjajúcich sa v izolovaných populáciách
Program: APVV
Project leader: Mgr. Kaňuch Peter PhD.
Annotation:Phenotype variability of an organism (morphological, physiological, reproductive, behavioural traits) is widespread and well known phenomenon. Adaptation on local optima of the environment often causes such differences. Study of geographically isolated populations without (or with very limited) current gene-flow is suitable when revealing the magnitude and function of the trait changes. In such circumstances, determination of adaptive and non-adaptive (selectively neutral) traits is more convenient. The species of orthopterous insects often occur in isolated populations and controversial life strategies are typical for them. Commonly, less dispersive and stenotopic forms occur. On other hand, invasive colonisation of new areas is known as well. Analyses of the phenotype in controlled rearing experiments will be used for the study of evolutionary adaptations which are essential for successful survival of the organism. These analyses will be performed with regard to the population-genetics structure, quantitative trait loci, expression of candidate genes and immune response of the species.

Ekofyziologická reakcia vybraných proveniencií lesných drevín na sucho
Program: VEGA
Project leader: RNDr. Ditmarová Ľubica PhD.
Annotation:There was studied response of selected provenances of beech (Fagus sylvatica L) and spruce (Picea abies Karst. L.) to simulated drought stress at level of physiological and growth processes. The primary aim of the project was to characterise several ecotypes of beech and spruce selected from various climatic regions of Slovakia from the viewpoint of their drought tolerance. Water is a primary factor determining growth and distribution of these woody plants in our conditions. The contemporaneous climate change is associated with intensive dry periods occurring an with increasing frequency, and reducing resistance of the two woody plants against adverse environmental conditions. Because neech and spruce are of the highest commercial importance in C and E Europe, and, at the same time, more frequent and intensive dry periods are expected primarily in summer, identification of dry-tolerant ecotypes becomes of crucial importance for forest management and forestation activities in the future.

Fragmentation and formation of new habitats after forest disturbances: ecological plasticity of species and their communities
Fragmentácia a vznik nových biotopov po narušení lesa: ekologická plasticita druhov a ich spoločenstiev
Program: VEGA
Project leader: RNDr. Krištín Anton DrSc.
Annotation:Over the last decades, the forest environment in European forests has been considerably fragmented, due to massive application of intensive management measures and due to many natural disturbances (wind, fire, avalanches). The effects that the fragmentation has exerted on individual animals, and on diversity and ecology of their associations are negative and positive – frequently dependent on the ecological status of the given taxonomic group or demands of the individual species. Forest fragmentation and its impacts will be studied on examples of structure and ecology of model animal species (Orthoptera, Dermaptera, Coleoptera, Lepidoptera, Mollusca, Aves). There will be also evaluated colonisation principles of new fragmented habitats in relation to non-fragmented forests or other source habitats of animal populations and communities

Production-ecological indicators for beech stands at rotation age and regeneration processes in these stands
Produkčno-ekologické ukazovatele bukových porastov v rubnom veku a ich regeneračné procesy
Program: VEGA
Project leader: Ing. Barna Milan PhD.
Annotation:The objective of the proposed research project is to acquire new knowledge about influence of intensity of cutting intervention used in shelterwood management system on diameter of trees in the parent stand along the whole stem – for individual trees differentiated according to their bio-sociological position in the stand. We will evaluate the influence of cutting intensity on length increments on branches and explore the dependence between these increments and diameter increments on stem. There will be assessed ecological relations and influence of parent stand and climatic variables on natural regeneration, succession and phenology in woody plants and herbs in understorey of the studied forest ecosystems. The obtained knowledge will be implemented in forest growing, primarily cutting and regeneration in which the potential of these forest ecosystems will be used more effectively, based on quantification and comprehensive evaluation of their increment-creating and regeneration abilities.

Program: VEGA
Project leader: Mgr. Kobza Marek PhD.
Annotation:Withering of woody and ornamental plants in urban greenery caused by parasitic fungi is very important subject for phytopathological research. Rapid and exact diagnostics of pathogens is necessity in the work of phytopathologists. Methodology of diagnostics of fungi from Coelomycetes and the differentiation of their species via molecular methods are the aim of this project. Changed ecological conditions create a new qualitatively environment for many biotic harmful agents, so their aggressiveness and pathogenicity increase. These damage originators together with climatic changes cause serious problems for woody plants. The aim of project is extend an existing knowledge from biology and pathogenicity of selected disease originators, determine their participation in a premature withering and dieback of woody plants and apply a new control method against them.
