Obesity and beneficial substances in red wine

The French are right. Red wine is really "good for heart", but even more interesting is, that substances in wine also help to combat obesity. It was confirmed by scientists from the Institute of Normal and Pathological Physiology in Laboratory of neuro-cardiovascular interaction under the leadership of doc. RNDr. Oľga Pecháňová, DrSc.
More than a third of the population suffers from metabolic syndrome. It is a major cluster of risk factors such as obesity, dyslipidemia (elevated fats in the blood), hypertension and insulin resistance (hyperglycemia). In other words, it is a term for several risk factors for cardiovascular diseases that have a common cause - the lack of body response to the insulin. Obesity is considered as the most significant cause of metabolic syndrome.
The French paradox is generally known. The habit of drinking red wine with meals is probably one of the biggest reasons for its existence. Polyphenols, natural chemical compounds which are occurring in the red wine, has a positive effect on the heart and blood vessels. Slovak scientists decided to test quality of dealcoholized concentrate of Slovak red wine – Alibernet. They experimented on animal model of SHR-cp (rats), which resembles most closely to the human metabolic syndrome. They were particularly interested in the influence of the non-alcoholic wine concentrate to the weight, blood pressure, lipids, blood glucose, total activity of NO-synthesis and to certain pro-inflammatory markers in the heart and aorta.
All endpoints were increased in the aorta of the strain which is representing the metabolic syndrome compared to control animals and pro-inflammatory markers were increased in the heart of this strain as well. The administration of the dealcoholized wine Alibernet concentrate significantly reduced blood pressure and blood glucose in SHR-cp rats. At the same time, this administration reduced the increase of the pro-inflammatory markers in the aorta and the heart
The results of the scientists of the Institute of Normal and Pathological Physiology showed pathological and also adaptive changes, which are developing in the aorta and the heart as a consequence of metabolic syndrome. Non-alcoholic wine concentrate reduced the increase of the pro-inflammatory markers. This effect may be one of the protective mechanisms of the polyphenolic substances which are contained in the concentrate of wine.
