2. Research Opportunities with ECORD – “Drilling for the Future”

Edinburgh, United Kingdom – 27-29 May 2008

Conversations with representatives from a number of geological surveys and universities across the European continent have indicated that there are countries that are interested in ECORD and IODP, and the scientific work that they do, but as yet are not members of the ECORD consortium. It was therefore suggested that a workshop dedicated to non-member countries, and invited delegates, be hosted by ECORD, to promote the scientific program and more fully explain the organisational structure and aims of ECORD and IODP.
A number of target countries have been identified, the aim being to invite scientists and funding body representatives where possible, to ensure that those actively involved in scientific research also find out about the benefits of joining the ECORD Consortium. In many cases delegates represent countries with little available funding to facilitate attending meetings such as this. Therefore it was decided that to ensure attendance, and aid networking and promotion of ECORD within the larger European Community, travel and accommodation should be funded through ECORD-Net funds.
The deadline for registration is 25 April 2008.

5. 4th EPSO Conference: “Plants for Life”

Toulon, France – 22-26 June 2008

AIM: The fourth EPSO Conference – which will explore the theme ‘Plants for life’ – will be held on the beautiful French Côte d’Azur, near Toulon, from 22 to 26 June 2008. The conference will address many of the challenges faced by the plant research community in an evolving world: climate change, preservation of the environment and of natural biodiversity, as well as the food and feed demands of a growing world population. Non-food crops for energy, biomaterials, biopharmaceuticals and other new products will also be an important focus of the conference.

The fourth EPSO Conference will bring together international scientists and experts who will provide insights into the most recent breakthroughs in the fields of genome structure and evolution, evolutionary biology, developmental biology, ecophysiology, system biology, economics, plant breeding and the challenges facing developing countries.

TOPICS: Plant science in Europe: Science policy <> Science and society: The challenges for tomorrow’s agriculture <> Understanding, preserving and using plant diversity: Genome structure and evolution, Plant adaptation, domestication and conservation, Climate change and challenges for the next decades <> Preserving our future by reducing the inputs in agriculture: Reducing water input, Reducing fertilizers, Reducing pesticides <> Improving plant product quantity and quality: Developmental biology, Improving yield, Food and feed <> New products: Plant based biofuels: how to improve them?, Biomaterials, biopharmaceuticals and other new products

PROGRAMME at www.epsoweb.org/catalog/conf2008/4CF_Programme_web.pdf

REGISTRATION: The number of participants is limited to 400. A reduced registration fee applies to EPSO Personal Members.

Registration deadline is 11 May 2008

6. Second ESF-FUNCDYN Conference on Functional Dynamics

Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Germany – 15-18 September 2008

The Second European Science Foundation Conference on Functional Dynamics is aimed at bringing together European scientists working on the area of "Functional Dynamics". This field is devoted to investigating dynamical behaviour that is associated with the function of a system, e. g. in biological or technological sense. Therefore, the meeting wishes to encourage the interaction between scientists working on biological, technical, chemical, and physical systems with those whose expertise lies on dynamical systems and nonlinear dynamics.

Applications should be sent by e-mail to marcus.hauser[at]physik.uni-magdeburg.de.

Attendance will be limited to 60-65 attendees. Please apply by 15 July 2008.
A notification of acceptance will be sent by 1 August 2008.

To apply for poster / oral contributions please include a short abstract of the contribution.
