The Deception Island of the archipelago South Shetlands is situated in the maritime Antarctic region. It is one of the most volcanically active site south of 60° S. A total of 20 taxa of diatoms were found in the mud and adjacent surrounding of littoral shallow coastal pool in Whalers Bay. Most of them are cosmopolitan species, only Luticola muticopsis is considered as Arctic-Antarctic species.
