In this paper the correlation between the forest cover and geographical factors is interpreted. The mentioned area (the Upper Nitra) was mapped geobotanically; on this basis as well as on an analysis of geographical factors a reconstruction of original plant associations has been carried out (Map 1). At the same time the present state of the forest cover and the occurrence of forest wood species has been put down (Map 2). Although the Upper Nitra Basin belongs to the warm border Carpathian basins, its northern border belongs already to the border belt o. mesophilous oak forests (Carpinion betuli Oberd. 53), This fact is a consequence of relatively high precipitations especially (above 800 mm) as well as of orographico- geomorphological conditions. The essential part of the range is occupied by eutrophic beech forests (Eu-Fagion Oberd, 57 emend. Tx. 66). In the area of tectonic outliers built of resisting Mid-Triassic dolomites and limestones, debris associations are spread (Acerion pseudoplatani Oberd. 57). The man exerted his influence upon the composition of forests mostly as a silvicultivator and herdsman. He planted spruce (Picea excelsa LINK.). Fir (Abies alba MILL.) has receded strongly in consequence of extensive clearcutting as well as by keeping cattle out and beech (Fagus silvatica L.) has filled commonly in its place. By keeping cattle out, pine (Pinus silvestris L.) has been amply spread.
