Problém Lažáneckého žlebu v Moravském krasu

The Valley of Lažánky in the Moravian Karst is a specific feature among the relief forms of the Moravian Karst, because it is filled up with marine sediments of the Lower Tortonian having a considerable thickness of more than one hundred metres. For this reason, the origin of the valley has been since the last decades of the nineteenth century a puzzling problem for geologists and geomorphologists. All of them agreed in the opinion that the valley was produced by stream erosion before the transgression of the Lower Tortonian sea, but disagreed in respect to the direction of the pre-Tortonian stream, and to the cause which stimulated the erosion. Numerous borings that were performed in the Valley of Lažánky in the recent years, and a detailed geomorphologic investigation, provided facts which show that the valley is a fault trough formed after the deposition of the Lower Tortonian marine sediments.
