The study gives a survey o£ investigations concerning the branch of historical geogpraphy within the Germán langauge area for last 20 years. The author States that historical geography has developed substantially as to the method and the conception of problems during the period mentioned and it fills a remarkable place within the system of geographical science today. The most progress has been attained in the sphere of cultural geography, namely in the research of urban and rural settlements.
