Under the notion of „cultural landscape“ (Kulturlandschaft, paysage humanisé, paisaje cultural) most authors understand a natural landscape more or less transformed by the purposeful activity of man. Up to now, the opinions on the notion and definition of cultural landscape could not be unified. Differences in understanding cultural landscapes by different authors necessarily result from the very complicated content of the object examined, namely the cultural landscape, submitted to changes in time and space, and from its very large, generalized character. This fact also causes considerable difficulties in the cultural landscapes taxonomical and typological dismembrement, where problems arise when determining adequate criteria of their quality and quantity y, or their common denominator. The general character of the term cultural landscape of en leads to its unsuitable use as well. When using this term, it is thus always necessary to indicate its more narrow, concrete significance.
