The contents of the contribution consists of a brief survey of methodical techniques used in geographical literature in studying the centre rate in retail trade. The technique by means of the so called index of centrality is stated here more in detail, which was applied to the territory of Slovakia. On the basis of the values of centrality index the places serving as the centres of trade have been laid out, these being divided to hierarchic groupes (Fig. 1, Table 1). Further, the boundaries of the tributary areas of trade centres have been determined (Fig. 2).
