On June 18th, 1978 the Slovak Academy of Sciences (SAV) celebrated the 25th Jubilee of its foundation. During this quarter of century the SAV has grown the leading component in the Slovak scientific research. Among the branches, which have begun developing since the foundation of the SAV, also geography belongs. The history of the Geographical Institute (Geografický Ústav) of the SAV is bound with the Geographical Institute (Zemepisný Ústav) of the Slovak Academy of Sciences and Arts, which was established formally on July 2nd, 1942. The intensive development of the Geographical Institute began after its incorporating into the SAV. Until the present the Geographical Institute of the SAV has spread to 62 workers and it has 6 departments. In harmony with quantitative and qualitative growth of the working place, also its scientific direction changed from the originally narrow special chosen topics into a complex regional-geographical research and to solving basic theoretico-methodological problems of geography.
