The study deals with the long-term development of the Czechoslovak towns with 10 th. or more inhabitants according to data derived from the population censuses from the year 1869 till the year 1970. A special attention has been paid to disparate development of towns in space and time and especially to the new phase of the urbanization after the II. world war, as well as to the differences of the tendencies of the urbanization existing between the Czech and the Slovak Soc.
