The third centenary of Mate] Bel’s birth (1684 – 1749) falls to this year. He was a significant Slovak scientist, geographer, historian, philologist and pedagogue. His extensive work contains also a series of documents of geographical nature. Of them the most extensive is the local historico-geographical work Notitia Hungariae novae historico geographica, from which, however, only four volumes were published. M. Bel has been the founder of a modern local historico-geographical science in this country. He was an excellent organizer and for the sake of his own work he for- med a wide circle of co-workers.
