The authors have carried out a hygienic macroscopic inspection of localities of some mountain lakes and springs as well as physical and chemical analyses of water samples with aiming at ascertaining presence of indicators of general and faecal pollution. They have described 7 springs, of which 6 are not quoted in tourist maps. The purity of water is endangered by tourist activities. The classification of the mountain lakes from the hygienic viewpoint is based on both the macroscopic characteristics and the physical-chemical analyses of samples. Measures to preserve the purity of water and to control tourist activities are proposed.
