Measuring ,,the size of industry“ is one of the key problems in geography of industry. The authors examine this problem in 14 Industrial centres in the Spiš land. The size is expressed by 5 partial indices, each of which providing different results. To overcome this deficiency and to express the size more objectively a synthetic index is used by them. To construct it they employed a method of analysing the principal components, by means of which they reduced the original 5 indices to 1. The results have been presented in maps, which unambiguously determine the hierarchical structure of the size of individual industrial centres.
