O článku:
This paper deals with detailed mineral composition of three lithological complexes distinguished in the Miocene deposits of the NE marginal parts of the Carpathian Foredeep: sandy-mudstone, coal-bearing (lignite beds) and carbonate (Lithothamnium beds). Particular attention was paid to clay minerals. The dominant clay mineral in all these complexes is dioctahedral smectite of montmorillonite type, showing a relatively high content of iron in octahedral layer. It was formed as a product of smectitization in situ of volcanic glass produced by post-orogenic volcanism within the Carpathian arc, deposited in lagoonal-deltaic and carbonate platform environments. Dynamics of depositional environment is responsible for different morphology of smectite aggregates. In rocks deposited in low-energy environment large, smectitized fragments of glass are preserved as "honeycomb" type aggregates of authigenic smectite. Immobile trace element ratios (Zr/TiO2–Nb/Y) in smectite indicate that the parent volcanic rocks were trachyandesitic in composition.
