The map signics is delimited as a sign stock of presentation means of the map as well as a structural level within the map language system, being engaged in defining the map signs, in classifying and thesauring them. The map sign is defined as a graphic unit, which with its form denotes a conventional meaning and takes up a position Ln the map. Those three properties (form, meaning and position) represent the basic triad of properties of the map sign. For the needs of map signics a classification of map signs has been worked out, where the signs are considered as abstracted in relation to the map and are named map syntagms. The map syntagms are divided into simple and composite (according to the number of designated meanings). The simple syntagms are divided into figural, linear and areal. The composite syntagms (synsyntagms) are divided into discrete and continuous. The continuous synsyntagms of relief, of geographical network, of river network and of density dot method are explained, further ways of the development of map signics are delineated.
