• Actively participate in writing research grants for postdocs.

Project description
Synthetic biology is an interdisciplinary and rapidly evolving field that explores the biological functions of naturally occurring phenomena and applies this knowledge to genetic engineering. The primary objective of the field is to engineer microorganisms with specific properties, facilitating the synthesis of various products, promoting sustainability in a bio-based economy, and offering solutions to environmental challenges. One of the current challenges in synthetic biology is how to increase the complexity of regulatory regions. Alternative DNA structures that act as genetic regulators can meet this need, and one type of such structures is the four-stranded DNA complexes called G-quadruplexes.
The newly established working group led by Dr. Jan Jamroskovic focuses on studying G-quadruplex DNA structures in bacteria and exploiting them in genetic engineering. The group investigates G-quadruplex DNA structures to comprehend their biology, maintenance, and their effects on fundamental cellular processes such as replication and gene transcription. The primary aim is to design synthetic bacterial promoters for use in both basic and applied research.

Requirements
Experience in molecular biology, microbiology, biochemistry and/or synthetic biology is required. Familiarity with DNA G-quadruplex field as well as technical expertise in protein purifications and biochemical assays using DNA/RNA polymerases, helicases, or other DNA-interacting proteins and skills in bioinformatics would be an advantage. A good command of written and spoken English is a must.

Candidates should submit:
1. Cover letter including research interests and qualifications (maximum 1 page),
2. Curriculum vitae (CV) including list of technical expertise and list of publications,
3. Names and contact details of two reference persons,
4. Certified copies of diplomas and link to PhD thesis,
5. Additional documents you think are important to include.

Please send all the documents in one PDF file to jan.jamroskovic@savba.sk with a subject “Postdoc position“. Applications will be processed continuously with two deadlines for two positions, 1st April 2024 and 1st August 2024, respectively. The starting date would be ASAP after selection of the candidates but not later than 1st of November 2024.
If you have any questions, please contact Dr. Jan Jamroskovic, Department of Microbial genetics, E-mail: jan.jamroskovic@savba.sk.
