The Institute for Research in Social Communication at SAS was established in 1990. At the Institute we perform basic interdisciplinary research, focusing on social communication and interpersonal relationships. We build on conceptual and methodological framework of psychology, educational science, and philosophy, while filling the gaps between scientific disciplines. We collaborate with local and international institutions in the fields of education and health, and inform them about results of our research. We train PhD. students in collaboration with universities.

We study the role of language, discourses and communication in mutually interconnected fields:

- Intergroup relations (between majority and ethnic, sexual, language and other minorities);
- Transformation of intimacy, romantic relationships and parenthood;
- Literacy and its development (Centre for Pedagogical Research);
- Citizenship and participation.

At the Institute we also conduct cutting-edge/frontier research in other relevant areas – such as projects in the fields of “society and technology”.

The Institute’s value lies in:

- its transdisciplinary and critical approach to social science research,
- its cross-cultural comparative framework,
- its focus on the impact of our research on society, especially in the field of education.
